I-580 reopens after a man and woman were shot

Interstate Highway 580 has reopened Wednesday afternoon more than two hours after a man and woman were shot on eastbound Interstate Highway 580 in Oakland, police and California Highway Patrol officials said.

The shooting was reported at 3:17 p.m. near the Fruitvale Avenue off-ramp from Highway 580, Oakland police said. Both the man and woman were found suffering gunshot wounds and taken to a hospital in stable condition.

At about 3:50 p.m., CHP officials said all eastbound lanes of the highway were closed while investigators searched for evidence. In addition to the highway lanes, the 14th Avenue on-ramp and Fruitvale off-ramp were also closed.

CHP officials said as of about 5:30 p.m. that the highway had reopened, but the Fruitvale off-ramp remained closed and the long closure caused severe traffic delays in the area.

Oakland police are investigating the shooting. Anyone with information about the incident has been asked to contact Oakland police at (510) 238-3426.
