A San Francisco man has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for his role in an attempted bank robbery in Cupertino in 2013, U.S. Attorney Brian Stretch announced Thursday.
Daniel Asa Hitesman was convicted of a single count of attempted bank robbery.
Prosecutors said Hitesman left a halfway house in San Francisco on July 23, 2013, went to Cupertino and into a bank on Stevens Creek Boulevard.
He entered the bank carrying a large bag and wearing a hat and sunglasses to cover his face, prosecutors said.
He approached the teller, demanded money, said he had a bag full of guns and said he would start shooting if he did not get the money, prosecutors said.
The teller refused to give him money, pressed the alarm and Hitesman fled the bank.
Investigators with the FBI distributed bank surveillance photos of the incident, and personnel from the halfway house Hitesman was staying at recognized him in the photos and contacted the FBI.
