Two juvenile suspects have been arrested in connection with a massive fire last week that destroyed the Millbrae Community Center, city officials said Monday.
City and county officials plan to hold a news conference this afternoon to discuss the details of the arrests of the two boys, who have not been identified.
Millbrae Mayor Anne Oliva said in a statement:
“I am thankful for the hard work and diligence of fire investigators at Central County Fire and detectives at the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Department.”
The fire broke out just before 4 a.m. Thursday along an exterior wall of the community center at 477 Lincoln Circle. The building’s roof collapsed as firefighters struggled to bring it under control. They finally got the fire out at about 8:15 a.m.
The cost of the damage was estimated to be up to $2 million.
Investigators quickly suspected arson because of the charring pattern on the rear exterior wall of the building where the fire started.
The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was called in to assist with the investigation.
The Millbrae Community Center was a popular venue for community events and programs. A teen camp that was taking place there last week was relocated to nearby Taylor Middle School.
