SF resident ID’d as Highway shooting victim

Police have identified a woman killed in a shooting on state Highway 4 in Pittsburg on Wednesday morning as 25-year-old San Francisco resident Shanique Marie.

Marie was one of two people in a vehicle that was shot at on the highway’s westbound side just east of Railroad Avenue in an incident reported to the California Highway Patrol at 10:47 a.m. Wednesday.

A suspect in another vehicle traveling on the highway shot into a vehicle occupied by Marie and a man, Pittsburg police Capt. Ron Raman said.

Their vehicle then swerved out of control, struck a dirt embankment and overturned.

They were both taken to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek for injuries they suffered as a result of the crash, as well as gunshot wounds.

Marie was pronounced dead at the hospital. The man is expected to survive.

Detectives believe the shooting was targeted and are investigating the events leading up to it, Raman said. Anyone with additional details is asked to call Pittsburg police at (925) 646-2441.

There have been at least three other shootings on Highway 4 since November and 18 or more across various highways in Alameda and Contra Costa counties in a recent flurry of highway violence.

Raman said Pittsburg police are working with the CHP to explore ways of increasing safety on Highway 4. Raman also announced that Pittsburg’s City Council will be asked Monday to approve a project to install security cameras to monitor traffic on the highway.

According to the meeting’s agenda, the highway has been central in a wave of shootings that have “resulted in property damage, injuries and loss of life.”

The City Council will be asked to make an allocation of funds to install cameras “in locations where they may aid the investigation and prosecution” of criminal activity on the highway.
