Pedestrian dies after I-80 crash

A 43-year-old Vallejo man died Thursday night after a car struck him along Interstate Highway 80, according to California Highway Patrol.

At about 9:10 p.m., CHP received a report of a multiple-vehicle collision involving a pedestrian in the first eastbound lane of the highway, just before Georgia Street in Vallejo, according to CHP.

After speaking with the four drivers involved in the collision, officers learned a woman driving a white Hyundai Sonata saw a pedestrian walk from the center median directly into the highway, CHP officials said.

The driver was unable to stop in time and struck the man. The collision sent the man into the air and he landed in the center median, CHP officials said.

Another driver in a gold Toyota Avalon, driving behind the Hyundai, broke and swerved into the center median. As the driver entered the center median, she noticed the victim in the center median, but could not stop in time and also struck the victim, CHP officials said.

A red Chevy Malibu then struck the Hyundai from behind. Following that, a black BMW struck the rear of the Chevy, according to CHP officials.

After the collision, the driver of the Chevy saw the victim in the center median and started CPR on the victim, CHP officials said.

Emergency personnel arrived on the scene and took over. The victim was taken to Kaiser Permanente Vallejo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 9:52 p.m., according to CHP.

Two lanes of the highway, just west of Georgia Street, were closed until 11:13 p.m., as CHP officials investigated the collision.
