Raiders ink veteran safety

The Raiders announced the signing of safety Taylor Mays Wednesday.

Oakland has big question marks throughout the secondary, and the signing is believed the be just one of at least a few in the coming weeks, as NFL rosters are trimmed from 90 players to 53.

Mays’ numbers have been disappointing thus far in his career, a second round pick of the 49ers in 2010, the 27-year-old has no interceptions and only 10 career starts.

Mays is a depth signing, the starters at safety essentially carved in stone, and will battle Larry Asante, Jonathan Dowling and Brandian Ross for a final roster spot.

Mays may have an edge, though, after playing his college ball at USC from 2006-2009 under Ken Norton Jr., who may have had some input on the decision to bring in the defensive back.

Mays brings with him 72 tackles, four passes defensed, one sack, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries.
