Caltrain No. 194 struck the man just after 10 p.m. at the San Bruno station, spokeswoman Tasha Bartholomew and Caltrain officials said.
Caltrain officials Tuesday night first reported that the man died in the collision, but someone found he was still alive, Bartholomew said.
The man was taken to a hospital where he died, she said. The death is the 15th on Caltrain tracks this year.
Caltrain officials said the collision caused significant delays as trains stopped in both directions. Trains on the northbound and southbound tracks were operating normally by 11:05 p.m., according to Caltrain.
