Newspaper publisher Manh Nguyen has been elected to represent District 4 on the San Jose City Council, according to results certified Monday by the Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters.
Nguyen received 56.03 percent, or 6,111 of the votes cast in last Tuesday’s special election, beating his opponent Tim Orozco who received 43.97 percent, or 4,795 votes, election officials said.
A total of 11,040 ballots were counted in the election for the District 4 seat vacated by former Councilman Kansen Chu, who was elected last November to the state Assembly.
Margie Matthews, a former city councilwoman who once represented District 4, has filled Chu’s seat in the interim.
Nguyen, a publisher for a daily Vietnamese language newspaper, had an early lead since polls closed last week, according to election officials.
Orozco, an aide to state Sen. Bob Wieckowski, D-Fremont, and Nguyen were the top two finishers in a special election for the city council seat on April 7, but neither received more than 50 percent of the vote, election officials said.
Orozco had finished with 22 percent of the total vote in the April election and Nguyen followed with 19.1 percent, according to election officials.
Out of 40,786 registered voters in District 4, 27 percent cast ballots, election officials said.
District 4 spans through North San Jose, including the Berryessa and Alviso neighborhoods.
