Buddhist monk at large after temple stabbing

A Buddhist monk stabbed and critically injured a fellow monk at an East Oakland temple on Tuesday evening, according to police.

Officers responded to reports of a stabbing at 6:19 p.m. in the 600 block of Douglas Avenue, police said.

A man associated with the Branch of International Community of Khmer Buddhist Monks Center at 624 Douglas Ave. confirmed the stabbing happened there and involved two monks.

The 66-year-old stabbing victim was taken to a hospital and was in critical but stable condition as of this morning, according to police.

The second monk fled the scene prior to the officers’ arrival and remained at large as of this morning.

Police are asking anyone with information about the assault to contact Oakland police at (510) 238-3426.
