Man arrested after barricading himself in woman’s home

A San Jose man was arrested on suspicion of trespassing and possession of stolen property after barricading himself inside an occupied home in Palo Alto on Monday afternoon, according to police.

Two women safely exited the home and Julian Baldes Alvarado, 26, was arrested with the assistance of a K-9 unit, police said.

At 1:47 p.m. Monday, police received reports of a suspicious man in the backyard of a residence in the 900 block of Oregon Avenue.

Responding officers set up a perimeter after Alvarado allegedly started jumping over fences in an attempt to escape, according to police.

Alvarado entered a home in the 900 block of Elsinore Drive through a sliding glass door at 2:36 p.m., at which time a 40-year-old woman working as a caretaker for an elderly resident ran outside to waiting officers, police said.

While officers were yelling into the home for Alvarado to surrender, a 90-year-old woman woke up and exited the home of her own accord without encountering the suspect, according to police.

The Palo Alto Police Department’s SWAT team responded and eventually entered the residence with a K-9 unit.

Alvarado was found in the garage, hiding on top of a water heater in a closet, according to police.

He was also determined to be in possession of a bicycle and backpack that had been reported stolen in the 400 block of West Charleston Road, police said.

Alvarado was arrested at 5:22 p.m. on suspicion of aggravated trespassing, resisting arrest, prowling, possession of stolen property and petty theft.

He was medically cleared at a hospital for bite wounds suffered during the arrest, according to police.

Police used social media to broadcast updates on the situation as it unfolded.

They also used the AlertSCC emergency alert system to notify landlines, email addresses and cellphones of the ongoing police activity.

Palo Alto police are asking anyone with additional information about the case to call (650) 329-2413. Anonymous tips can be emailed to or texted to (650) 383-8984.
