A 4-year-old boy who was found unattended in a vehicle early Monday morning in San Francisco’s Noe Valley neighborhood as two burglary suspects were arrested on the same street was handed over to child protective services, police said Thursday.
San Francisco police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza said 45-year-old Joseph Vernon, of East Palo Alto, and 38-year-old Samuel Hayter, of San Francisco, were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy, child endangerment and burglary charges.
Vernon was also arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest, Esparza said.
Officers responded at 2:13 a.m. Monday to a reported burglary in progress in the 100 block of 27th Street.
Witnesses heard noises and running inside a building under construction there, police said.
One suspect tried to flee by running along rooftops, but apparently injured himself in the process of fleeing.
He attempted to hide but a U.S. Park police dog eventually located him.
The other suspect ran out of the building and was arrested, police said.
After arresting the two suspected burglars, a neighbor noticed a 4-year-old boy inside a vehicle on the block.
The boy did not live in the neighborhood, Esparza said.
Police said the boy may be related to the suspects.
He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital before being handed over to child protective services, Esparza said.
