Citizen on jet ski rescues distressed surfer

San Mateo County firefighters, Pacifica police and the U.S. Coast Guard staged a water rescue for a surfer in distress near Pacifica State Park Friday morning, but a civilian with a jet ski got there first.

The call came in at 10:12 a.m., when a surfer drifted out to sea and was unable to paddle in to shore.

Coast Guard Lt. Sean Kelley said the Coast Guard was sending a helicopter and a boat crew around 11:45 a.m., but Capt. Dan Steidle with the Pacifica Police Department said the surfer was ultimately rescued by a citizen on a jet ski who towed him in.

No serious injuries were reported, according to Steidle.
