McCovey’s restaurant moving to San Francisco

After more than a decade of serving San Francisco Giants fans from around the Bay Area, McCovey’s Restaurant in Walnut Creek is closing in February and plans to move into the shadow of AT&T Park in San Francisco, a restaurant manager said Wednesday.

Manager Paul Ramos said the details of the move haven’t yet been shared with staff and the new restaurant won’t open for at least two years. The restaurant, owned by Rick Dudum of Dudum Sports & Entertainment, is named after Hall of Fame first baseman Willie McCovey and features Giants and other baseball memorabilia.

Ramos said Dudum plans to make an announcement “soon” with more details about the move and said the new location will be near the Giants’ home ballpark and McCovey Cove. The last day for the Walnut Creek location will be Feb. 2 after the National Football League Super Bowl, which is scheduled a day earlier.

As for Ramos, he said he started working at the restaurant as a dishwasher when it opened. He said he spoke limited English before he worked his way up to the position of manager:

“It’s been amazing. … The other night, (Giants outfielder Gregor) Blanco was in here signing autographs and everything. (Former Oakland Athletics manager) Tony La Russa was in a few nights ago.”

Ramos said he has another job lined up at Maria, Maria, a Danville restaurant also owned by Dudum Sports & Entertainment, and described the move as “bittersweet.”
