BART disrupted by gusty winds, debris

BART officials are reporting that all service has stopped in both directions between the Hayward and South Hayward stations due to an obstruction on the track possibly related to high winds that have plagued the transit system Tuesday afternoon.

The service disruption is one of several caused by high winds and wind-blown debris throughout the BART system. BART officials are also reporting that service has stopped between the Coliseum station and Oakland International Airport due to a PG&E power outage.

Trains were previously running on a reduced schedule to the airport after BART switched to a backup generator around 2:45 p.m. BART service between Concord and Pleasant Hill has also been suspended after a westbound train struck wind-blown debris on the tracks between stations this afternoon around 2:25 p.m., according to BART officials.

The approximately 100 passengers on the affected train were transferred to another train and BART has established a bus bridge in the area, officials said.

Service was also halted in both directions between the 24th Street Mission station in San Francisco and the Daly City station after a large tree fell on the tracks between the Balboa Park and Glen Park stations around 1:15 p.m. Crews are working to remove that tree, which is described as being about 1 foot in diameter and about 30 feet long.

There is no estimated time for when the tracks will reopen in San Francisco and passengers are being encouraged to use parallel San Francisco Municipal Railway and SamTrans services, BART officials said.

Back in the East Bay, an additional service disruption between the Castro Valley and Bay Fair stations that occurred shortly before 3:30 p.m. was caused by an equipment problem on the tracks.

The problem has been resolved and service in the area has resumed, BART officials said. Even where BART service is still operational, reports of debris on the tracks in multiple locations are causing systemwide delays, officials said.
