Catcher Derek Norris was moved to the San Diego Padres for pitchers Jesse Hahn and R.J. Alvarez, along with international bonus slot 117 — a relatively worthless addition.
The A’s also sent minor league arm Seth Streich to the warm shores of San Diego.
There are now only two All-Stars remaining on the A’s roster, Sean Doolittle and Scott Kazmir.
Hahn, a starter who pitched 74 innings last season, with a 3.07 ERA, adds to the depth of an Oakland rotation with plenty of question marks. With the departures of Jeff Samardzija and Jon Lester, the A’s rotation has only two certainties to this point: Kazmir and Sonny Gray will be in line to start.
Beyond that, it’s anyone’s guess.
Jarrod Parker and A.J. Griifin, two once promising starters, underwent Tommy John surgery early last spring and will have a hard time performing at a level needed in the big leagues.
The A’s have brought in plenty of young arms — Sean Nolin, Chris Bassett, Kendall Graveman and others — Hahn and Alvalrez might round out any desire for starting pitching.
The A’s didn’t get any help in the middle infield, their largest need, and now own a surplus of minor league talent. With so many young arms, it wouldn’t be surprising at all if Doolittle is moved elsewhere, particularity if a team is willing to give up a major league infielder.
