There’s been a trend in baseball. Teams sign Cuban prospects and they make an instant impact.
Yoenis Cespedes, Jose Fernandez and Yasiel Puig all come to mind. This offseason’s most coveted is Yasmani Tomas and both Bay Area teams have been linked to him.
Tomas is scheduled to visit the States Friday to meet with his agent, Jay Alou, Vice Sports reports. His 24th birthday is also that day.
The right-handed outfielder has been heavily targeted by the Giants, San Diego Padres and Philadelphia Phillies according to CBS Sports.
The San Francisco Chronicle also reported the A’s scouted Tomas “a lot.”
Tomas has told teams that he wants to exceed the deal the Boston Red Sox gave Rusney Castillo, which was six years and $72.5 million.
He batted .290 in five seasons with Industriales in Cuba’s Serie Nacional with a .345 on-base percentage, 39 home runs and 15 stolen bases in 851 at-bats.
The Giants inked another Cuban outfielder, Daniel Carbonell, to a four-year, $1.4 million contract back in June.
The Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals have also shown interest in Tomas.
