Free agent third baseman Pablo Sandoval will reportedly meet with Boston Red Sox representatives next week at baseball's general managers meetings.
The Boston Red Sox have reached out to Pablo Sandoval‘s representatives, reports Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.
Sandoval will meet Red Sox front office personnel face-to-face during the general managers meeting next week in Scottsdale, Ariz., according to a major league source.
The Red Sox have no steady answer at third base. Will Middlebrooks does not appear to be the long-term solution.
Fenway Park is one of the more hitter-friendly stadiums in baseball. It has the shortest distance of any field in baseball to left field (310 feet) or right field (302 feet).
Sandoval, 28, batted .317 from the left side in 2014.
His age helps his case for a contract in the five- to six-year range, but his perennial weight issue could hurt the longevity of the deal.
Sandoval is listed at 5-foot-11 inches and 245 pounds, but appears to have put on weight during the season.
The American League offers the advantage of Sandoval being penciled as a designated hitter from time-to-time. With questions at third base and David Ortiz in the twilight of his career, Boston would be a good fit the Panda.
Giants general manager Brian Sabean stressed the importance of resigning Sandoval on Thursday.
Other teams that expressed interest are the Toronto Blue Jays and the Chicago White Sox. Both have a hole at third base.
