Study: Viagra raises skin cancer risk

You know how the commercial goes:  “Seek immediate medical help if you have an erection lasting longer than four hours.”

That’s Viagra, of course.  It seems now there’s another reason you may want to go to your doctor:  to consider ditching the Viagra for healthier alternative methods of easing erectile dysfunction.

According to an article in Time magazine, Viagra, which is also known by its non-commercial name, sildenafil citrate, has linked been linked with significantly higher cancer rates.

A study published in the medical journal JAMA Internal Medicine reported men who participated in long-term research with the drug nearly doubled their risk of developing melanoma (skin cancer) as well as other cancers.

Other ED drugs like Cialis were not included in this study.

Should this really surprise anyone?  Artificially pumping something up that doesn’t want to, well, go up is bound to have consequences.  But that’s just my layman’s opinion.

What the Time article failed to mention was that there are non-pharmaceutical alternatives for ED.  These can include changes in diet and even psychotherapy.

Of course, I’m not a doctor, so you’ll have to do your own research and consult your medical professional on this.  And there are certainly cases where men just grown old.  But unless you want cancer with your hard-on, you might do well to consider the alternatives to Viagra.
