49ers’ Eric Reid bounds into Pro Bowl

The San Francisco 49ers season is over, but rookie safety Eric Reid will be the teams’ lone representative at the Pro Bowl in Hawaii Sunday after being selected as an alternate.

Reid replaces Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor who will be playing in the Super Bowl on Feb. 2.

Reid tweeted earlier:

“Would much rather be headed to New York but Hawaii isn’t bad.”

Eight other 49ers — Left tackle Joe Staley, guard Mike Iupati (fractured ankle), tight end Vernon Davis, running back Frank Gore (broken finger), defensive end Justin Smith along with linebackers Ahmad Brooks, Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman (ACL/MCL) — were honored with Pro Bowl invites, but will not attend due to injuries or it simply being “too soon” following their loss in the NFC Championship at Seattle.

Though Reid was exposed in the playoffs, the 49ers first-round draft pick (18th overall) started all 16 regular-season games recording 77 tackles, two fumble recoveries, four interceptions and 11 passes defensed.

The LSU product replaced departed Pro Bowler Dashon Goldson at free safety and replicated his predecessor’s hard-hitting style for much of the year, but after suffering two concussions he began altering his style of attack.

Reid is the first 49ers defensive back to make the Pro Bowl in his rookie season since Ronnie Lott in 1981.

Reid is signed through 2016.
