Hiker stumbles upon decayed human remains

It’s like something out of a horror movie, or the opening to an episode of “CSI” or “Castle.”

You’re on a morning hike. The weather’s great, you’re feeling healthy, then BAM! You suddenly stumble and see that there are human bones at your feet.

Except that for the hiker that stumbled upon the human remains and clothing February 18 up in the Peninsula hills, the shocking discovery wasn’t followed up by awesome intro music or spiffy opening credits featuring Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz.

We can bet, though, that when the hiker found the human skull and other bones near Highway 92, that he or she was praying for the 5-0 task squad to show up.

The human were found just off-trail in the Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Reserve, and could potentially be three years old, authorities told on Friday.

Searches into missing persons reports from back in 2009 are already underway.

Hmm, three-year-old missing persons case. More reminiscent of “Without A Trace?”

Okay, no more TV show references, I promise.

Preliminary examinations of the bones show the victim was a white male in his 50s or 60s. Clothing found with the remains reveal the deceased had a 54-inch waist and wore a size 12 shoe.

However, a full-blown identity or cause of death is still unknown.

Anyone with knowledge of a missing person that fits the current description of the remains is encouraged to contact sheriff’s Detective Matthew Broad at (650) 363-4363.
