Melky Cabrera could wear batting crown

Andrew McCutchen and Buster Posey better pick up the pace. That’s the only way they are going to win the NL batting title.

It won’t be awarded to either of them on a disqualification. They will have to win it on their own.

MLB commissioner Bud Selig was in New York taping an episode of Centerstage for the YES Network when he was asked about whether his office would step in and strip Cabrera of the title due to his suspension:

“We’ll see how it all plays out. We generally don’t interfere in that process. We’ll take a look at it at the end of the year. … You can’t change records because once you get into that it would never stop. It would create more problems than it would solve.”

So if you’re disgusted with Cabrera and hoped he wouldn’t be allowed to claim the batting title, you’re going to be disappointed yet again.

Entering Wednesday, McCutchen is hitting .339 while Posey is at a distant .333. With two weeks left in the season, they need to pass Cabrera’s .346 to avoid yet another tainted baseball record.

Some agree with Selig’s decision:

The Chronicle’s Henry Schulman thinks fans need to get over it. It’s an on-field accomplishment, not an award, and can’t be taken away.
