New SF archbishop busted for DUI

Incoming San Francisco Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone allegedly decided to get some sinning out of his system before assuming his new position, according to San Diego police.

Cordileone was arrested near San Diego State University early Saturday morning on suspicion of driving under the influence.

The 56-year-old holy man, who is a San Diego native, is known for being vehemently against same-sex marriage, abortion and birth control. He was appointed as Archbishop of San Francisco July 1:

“I don’t approach these issues from a political standpoint. It’s not a political position that determines my thinking. It’s the gospel of Jesus Christ and of what most affirms true of human dignity and justice.”

Cordileone was booked into San Diego’s county jail for a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence and later posted bail, according to News10, a San Diego news station.

He is currently serving as a bishop at a church in Oakland. He is expected to assume his new position October 4, the feast day for St. Francis of Assisi.
