The Giants haven’t made it official, but all indications point to Emmanuel Burriss starting the season as the Giants Opening Day second baseman.
With Freddy Sanchez likely to start the season on the DL, Burriss has seized the opportunity and will likely hear his named announced as a starter on April 6.
The 27-year-old Burriss has impressed Giants coaches this spring, compiling a .405 batting average in 18 games. In 222 games over four seasons with the Giants, Burriss hit just .250 with a single home run and 76 strikeouts.
CSN Bay Area’s Andrew Baggarly was told that if a decision had to be made today, Burriss would get the nod.

Another sign that Burriss is in the driver’s seat is that the Giants are telling teams that they are open to trading Mike Fontenot and Ryan Theriot. Both players have contracts that become guaranteed if they are still on the Giants roster March 30th.
