Dating game puts ‘Love on Wheels’

Everybody loves a throwback, right?

These days, even big companies use them as a marketing strategy (think Coca-Cola and their vintage designs, or throwback Pepsi with its real sugar).

For the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, though, nostalgia means bike love, in the form of a ’70s-style dating game called “Love on Wheels.”

Like the retro game show “The Dating Game,” this yearly winter event gives singles the opportunity to question three potential suitors — hidden from their view — then decide who she or he would like to date.

The questions are often quirky and feature thinly-concealed bike-related innuendo. At the end of the round, each questioner chooses one of three contestants, meets him or her, and takes that lucky someone on a romantic bike ride around the Mission.

For people too shy for the bright lights of the stage, there will be ample opportunity to find love. With DJ Jamie Jams laying down a background groove, singles can mingle, talk, and exchange phone numbers, Twitter handles and e-mail addresses.

What if I’m married, or going steady, you ask? No big deal. Come out and support your single friends by cheering them on during their round, or even by volunteering.

Love on Wheels will be hosted at Public Works on Erie Street (at Mission) this Wednesday. Doors at 6 followed by the game show at 7. Admission is $10, $5 for San Francisco Bicycle Coalition members, and free with a new SFBC membership bought at the door.
