Time to give your Christmas tree the boot

Another Christmas seems to have flown by and, if you’re anything like me, you’re wondering what to do with that withered green thing standing in your living room that used to be your Christmas tree.

Good news — San Francisco’s 25th annual “Treecycling” program will swing by to pick up your tree for free. Even better news — the tree that was once adorned with your handmade ornaments and tchochkies will now be used as biofuel.

Whether you had a Charlie Brown tree or one more Rockefeller-esque, Recology SF will take it. All you have to do is throw on some slippers and drag your tree out to the curb alongside your regular trash for them to pick up. Once they pick your tree up it will be turned into wood chips and sold to energy-generating facilities in Tracy and Woodland to be used as biomass.

All the profit goes to offset Recology’s cost of collection. Last year about 514 tons of Christmas trees were collected in San Francisco.

The company will pick up trees Jan. 2-6 and Jan 9-13. All trees must be free of decorations and man-made materials. Place the tree at the curb before 6 a.m. on your regularly scheduled pickup day.
