UPDATE: Police moved in around 8 a.m. Sunday, clearing the encampment at 19th and Telegraph. No arrests or injuries were reported.
Demonstrators met little resistance from police Saturday, as Occupy Oakland established a new encampment in a vacant lot at Telegraph and 19th Street, just five blocks north of the evicted Frank Ogawa Plaza.
“People are settled in for the night,” read a update posted 1 a.m. Sunday on a blog for Occupy Oakland.
To claim the dirt-covered lot, protestors cut through chain-linked fence and removed “no trespassing” signs. The move was seen as bold defiance of Mayor Jean Quan, who said Thursday that new encampments would not be tolerated.
The group’s sound truck was impounded by police at approximately 10:30 p.m. for noise and anti-sideshow laws, according to the demonstrators’ blog. There had been no arrests as of late Saturday night.
Some protestors and a city spokesperson expressed doubt the new encampment would be active for more than a night or two, reports the San Francisco Chronicle.
