Police say a man was fatally shot after he charged officers following a standoff outside a Sunnyvale home.
A man police say called dispatchers and told them he had killed somebody in a Sunnyvale home has been shot and killed after police say he charged officers with a gun.
A Sunnyvale police spokesman says the man was fatally shot after he charged police who had surrounded the home on the 600 block of San Pedro Ave. a little before 11 a.m. Thursday.
As he charged, the sound of several gunshots — apparently from members of a SWAT team — could be heard.
After the shooting, Sunnyvale police Capt. Dave Pitts told reporters:
“The SWAT team approached the residence and made contact with the individual inside the residence. At that point, the individual charged the officers with a weapon. The officers were forced to open fire and shoot the individual.”
When officers entered the home, they found the body of a woman inside.
Police say the trouble started around 8 a.m. when dispatchers took a call from the man who said he had killed somebody at the home.
A SWAT team was called in and surrounded the house, while police told residents of the area to stay inside their homes.
It’s not known what relationship — if any — there was between the man shot by police and the woman found dead inside the home. Their names have not been released.
