A Stockton fire captain was fatally shot early Monday while battling a pre-dawn blaze in the city, officials said.
Max Fortuna, 47, and Engine 2 were responding to a dumpster fire at 4:45 a.m. in the area of Aurora and Washington streets when he was shot, according to police.
Stockton City Manager Harry Black said the blaze was getting close to a structure and while firefighters were working to extinguish it, gunshots were heard.
Police officers were dispatched at 5:02 a.m. to the shooting at 142 S. Aurora St., Stockton Interim Police Chief, Jim Chraska said. The area is near State Route 4.
Fortuna was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, officials said.
A 67-year-old man was detained in connection with the shooting. Police said a firearm was located at the scene.
Fortuna leaves behind a wife and two children.
