Tanker fire shuts down I-80 near Hilltop Drive

All lanes of Interstate 80 are closed between Hilltop and El Portal drives in the San Pablo/Richmond area due to a major traffic collision involving a burning tanker.

The tanker caught fire, producing a large plume of dark smoke. A Crockett-Carquinez firefighters are at the scene providing provide mutual aid. Fire officials said the tanker has an 8,000-gallon capacity.

The California Highway Patrol reported the incident shortly before 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Richmond police are asking people to avoid the Hilltop Mall, Shane Drive and the Rollingwood area.

Residents in the area have been asked to shelter in place.
