New Gold Dust Lounge locale not too shabby

Team SFBay is a big fan of “the little guy.” The underdog. And of course, the old school.

And all of you out in Readerland know we were rooting for James and Tasios Bovis when their bar, the Powell Street staple Gold Dust Lounge, went head-to-head with bigwigs that pushed to evict the elderly couple in order to make way for some loaded new tenants that would surely pay them more.

Sadly, landlord Handlery Hotels got their way this past May and gave the Bovises the boot. And there was talk that the bar “wasn’t historic enough,” but that’s another argument for another article.

But fear not, fellow fans of the old school underdogs! The Gold Dust has a new location at Fisherman’s Wharf; and from the first glance that SFist gave us today, the bar’s interior is looking pretty swanky.

As the lovely photo shows us, it has the decor to to keep the Gold Dust’s old-timey vibe alive: Dark wood fixtures and dark-cherry-colored carpeting, reminiscent of the spot the bar called home from 1933 to mid-2012. Heck, even the big-bulb chandeliers look like they were stolen from the original Union Square locale.

SFist isn’t too fond of the crazy-long bar — which they say “appears to be about 12,000 miles long” — but if it seats more patrons needing their dollar-vodka and cheap-y margarita fix.

And there isn’t a spot for the house band yet, but hey! The seemingly long, skinny new layout — and 3,100 square feet, three times larger than the original — will certainly lend itself well to the incorporation of a stage.

Per the Gold Dust Lounge’s Facebook page, the bar is shooting for a New Year’s Eve grand opening.
