The MacArthur Tunnel in the Presidio was evacuated and closed to traffic for a about an hour after a car burst into flames Sunday afternoon, filling the tunnel with heavy smoke, the San Francisco Fire Department said. The incident was not the result of a crash, the department emphasized in a summary on its Facebook page, and there were no injuries.
In its post, the department said:
“We have plans in place to respond to incidents such as this one today from different angles.”
“It is our opinion based off experience that every incident on freeways requires multiple points of access, in this case we had multiple units coming from both sides.”
The department continued:
“In today’s incident, this response strategy worked, as some companies could not access the car fire due to traffic, and others could due to the route taken.”
