Niles Canyon Road in unincorporated Alameda County, blocked by fallen boulders on Monday afternoon, may be closed during the evening commute, Fremont police said.
Work to clear the road, also known as State Route 84, may take another three to four hours, according to Fremont police in a 1:30 p.m. advisory. Commuters and residents should prepare for heavy backups on Interstate Highway 680, and for commuters driving through Fremont to reach the East Bay, according to police.
Motorists coming from the Dumbarton Bridge are encouraged to travel north Interstate Highway 880 to interstates 238 and 580 in Castro Valley to avoid Mission Boulevard and heavy delays in Fremont.
