Prosecutors have charged a suspect connection with the hit-and-run of a 14-year-old Oakland boy who was seriously injured earlier this month while riding his bicycle, Oakland police announced Sunday.
The suspect, identified as Leah Conner, has been charged by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, police said Sunday. No other information was immediately available.
The hit-and-run occurred around 12:23 p.m. Jan. 2 on 35th Avenue. When police arrived, they found that the victim had been dragged under the car for at least four blocks. Conner allegedly drove away after the boy had been dislodged from the car.
The boy, identified as Carlos, was taken to the hospital, where he has undergone multiple surgeries and is recovering, according to a GoFundMe page started by his uncle Errico Bachicha.
Bachicha wrote Jan. 10 in an update on the fundraising page:
“I was with Carlos last night for several hours, and he’s looking and acting like himself.”
The GoFundMe campaign has raised over $49,000 of the $100,000 sought to help with Carlos’ recovery.
Community members are bolstering the campaign. Sunday’s “Lil Dad Day,” named for Carlos’ nickname “Lil Dad,” will include a bicycle ride and vendor fair from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. to raise money and “promote bicycle rider safety in Oakland,” according to the GoFundMe page. The fair is being held at Movement Inc. at 3832 MacArthur Blvd.
