A Hayward elementary school teacher is one of 104 educators nationwide recently honored with a 2016 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, California Department of Education officials announced Friday.
Nancy Wright, who teaches third through sixth grades at Hayward’s Lorin Eden Elementary School and also serves as the science teacher on special assignment for the Hayward Unified School District, was declared the winner of the science teaching award for California.
She is lauded for increasing students’ wonder for science using hands-on activities, according to State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Tom Torlakson, a former science teacher himself:
“I applaud these teachers who play an essential role in shaping and inspiring our students in mathematics and science.”
Beyond her classroom duties, Wright teaches after-school education, leading the engineering club and coordinating the school science fair.
The mathematics winner for California is Gabriela Cardenas, a first and second-grade, dual-language teacher at the UCLA Lab School, the laboratory for the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies in Los Angeles.
The presidential awards are known as the highest recognition an elementary or secondary math or science teacher may receive. The program is administered by the National Science Foundation on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
