A man died after his vehicle crashed into an Amtrak train in unincorporated Monterey County near Salinas on Monday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The man was driving a Ford F-150 west on a private road across from the intersection of Esparanza Road and southbound U.S. Highway 101 at 7:04 p.m., according to the CHP.
For a reason yet to be determined, the man didn’t yield to an approaching Amtrak train traveling north, CHP officials said. The front of the train hit the Ford’s left front fender and the man suffered fatal injuries.
CHP officials said alcohol and drugs are not suspected to be involved in the crash. The Monterey County coroner’s office will identify the man after notifying his family of the death.
