A Petaluma man was killed when an off-road vehicle he was driving rolled over Saturday night in unincorporated Sonoma County just outside of Petaluma, California Highway Patrol officials said.
Garrett Hughes, 21, suffered head trauma and was pronounced dead around 9 p.m. at the back of a property on Chapman Lane.
CHP officials said Hughes was driving a 2017 Yamaha Rhino in a grassy field east of the Chapman Lane property.
The vehicle rolled over as Hughes was spinning the rear wheels while driving in a counter-clockwise direction on a makeshift circular track.
CHP officials said two other people were in the vehicle when it rolled over. They complained of pain after the crash but declined to be taken to a hospital.
CHP officials said the vehicle rolled over possibly because of the speed at which Hughes was driving and because he may have been intoxicated.
It appears none of the occupants of the vehicle were wearing seatbelts or helmets, according to the CHP.
