San Francisco city officials are celebrating the completion of one of the first green infrastructure projects in The City, an eight-block stretch of permeable pavement and rain gardens in the Ingleside Terrace neighborhood.
The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission will host a community block party and ribbon cutting Friday celebrating the completion of the Holloway Green Street Project on Holloway Avenue between Lee and Ashton Avenues.
The project’s permeable pavement and rain gardens will use plants and soil to filter, clean and catch one million gallons of storm water runoff each year before it enters the sewer system, city officials said.
The project also includes bike and pedestrian improvements and adds native habitat and biodiversity to the area.
SFPUC Commissioner Francesca Vietor said:
“We are very excited to celebrate with the community and demonstrate how green infrastructure works in their neighborhood. … These projects not only reduce the burden on our sewer system, but they transform neighborhoods by increasing urban greening, biodiversity, and public spaces in the area.”
