A fight involving a security guard and a fan at the Oakland Coliseum during Monday night’s game between the Oakland Athletics and San Francisco Giants was over a reportedly stolen backpack, according to police.
The guard was employed by a sub-contractor hired by the team’s third-party security company, and will not be returning to work at A’s games in the future, according to team spokeswoman Catherine Aker:
“We do not tolerate violence and we have referred this matter to the Oakland Police Department.”
Oakland police spokeswoman Officer Johnna Watson said the altercation ensued around 9 p.m. after the security guard found a backpack that had reportedly been stolen from another security guard and was in the possession of a fan.
The bag was recovered, but some of the items inside were missing, according to Watson.
Police responded to the incident, but stadium security personnel had already escorted the fan out of the area before they arrived. The case remains under investigation.
