One of the reasons Phineas Gage was so famous is that the railroad spike effectively changed his personality — he was said to be thereafter permanently different: unable to control his urges, particularly awkward or poor-mannered in social situations. This was one of the earlier case studies which spurred on the idea that the brain had intimate connection with personality and psychology. Cool stuff…
