The blaze was reported at 7:47 a.m. at 1199 Stockton St., in a building with a commercial business on the first floor and several residential units on the second floor, according to fire officials.
Firefighters rescued a man from the building and initially said he was in serious condition, however his condition has since been downgraded to minor injuries not considered life-threatening.
Firefighters are currently trying to extinguish hot spots and deal with a fire in the building’s basement, according to fire officials.
No other injuries were reported and no evacuations have been put in place.
The number of residents who have been displaced was not immediately available.
Mandarin and Cantonese translators working with the city are on site to assist the victims. The American Red Cross has also responded to the scene, fire officials said.
Residents are being asked to avoid the area near the 1100 and 1200 blocks of Stockton Street. Residents are also being advised to close their windows to avoid smoke from the fire.
