The BART board of directors approved nearly $3 million for replacing obsolete parts in 12 of the most frequently broken escalators at six stations in San Francisco.
The funding will mainly be used to replace controllers that have been in operation in the escalators for the last 19 years.
BART staff wrote in a report to the directors:
“The existing escalator controllers make troubleshooting difficult and time-consuming for technicians.”
BART director Nick Josefowitz, who represents San Francisco, said Thursday:
“This is one of the biggest complaints that I get. … I think it’s terrific that we’re trying to deal with this problem.”
The $2.9 million contract was awarded to the Santa Ana-based Excelsior Elevator Corporation.
