Car strikes, kills 90-year-old pedestrian

A 90-year-old woman was struck and killed while she was crossing the street in Walnut Creek Thursday evening, according to police.

The woman was crossing at 2100 Tice Valley Blvd. in a crosswalk just before 6 p.m. when she was struck by a northbound vehicle, police said.

She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead just after 6:30 p.m.

The vehicle’s driver, a 69-year-old San Pedro resident, was not hurt. The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

While the collision remains under investigation, police said there is no indication drugs or alcohol were involved and it appears that darkness might have been a factor.

The victim’s identity has not yet been released, pending notification of next of kin.

The pedestrian death is the second one this week in Walnut Creek.

Walnut Creek resident Maya Karmanova, 56, was struck and killed Monday at 7:50 a.m. as she used a crosswalk at Treat Boulevard and Candelero Drive, according to police.

The driver in that incident, a 44-year-old Manteca resident, allegedly ran a red light. He was not injured and remained at the scene to cooperate with investigators.

Drugs and alcohol were not suspected as factors in that incident either, pending the results of blood tests, but police said they were looking into whether the driver was texting at the time of the crash.
