An inmate at a state prison medical facility in Vacaville allegedly tried to kill a guard early this morning, according to prison officials.
The inmate attacked the correctional officer in the California Medical Facility’s Psychiatric Services Unit around 1:40 a.m. with an unidentified weapon, officials said.
The officer was able to fight off his attacker and escape, and additional staff responded to help subdue the inmate.
The officer was initially treated at the prison hospital clinic before being transferred to an outside hospital. He has since been released and is recovering.
The inmate has been medically evaluated and transferred to another unit, officials said. His identity has not been released.
The attack remains under investigation and the motive is unknown.
No other injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
California Medical Facility is a medical facility housing around 2,400 prison inmates that includes a treatment center, inpatient and outpatient psychiatric services and a hospice unit for terminally ill patients. It also includes a licensed acute care psychiatric hospital and intermediate care facility, officials said.
