Police suspect a driver was under the influence of alcohol when he struck and injured an 11-year-old girl crossing the street with her younger brother in South San Francisco Saturday afternoon, police said.
Officers responded at 3:15 p.m. to the 300 block of Commercial Avenue on a report of an automobile and pedestrian collision, police said.
Police said an 11-year-old girl and her 6-year-old brother were crossing the street when a car traveling east on Commercial Avenue struck the girl.
The girl suffered injuries not considered life-threatening and was transported to San Francisco General Hospital.
Police said the driver, identified as 26-year-old Alberto Marquez Gomez, of South San Francisco, tried to brake and swerved but was unable to avoid hitting the girl. Officers investigating the collision reportedly recognized Gomez was showing signs of being under the influence of alcohol and conducted field sobriety tests, police said.
Gomez reportedly failed the field tests and police said he was arrested at the scene on suspicion of felony DUI.
Gomez was booked in the Maguire Correctional Facility, also known as the main jail in San Mateo County, where he is being held on a $100,000 bail.
