Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White said Engine 1 was returning to quarters after clearing a call at 2:12 a.m. when the truck struck a bicyclist at the intersection of Mason and Turk streets.
The cyclist was traveling west on Turk Street, Hayes-White said.
The bicyclist suffered critical injuries and was transported to San Francisco General Hospital, Hayes-White said.
Hayes-White said the department is cooperating fully with the San Francisco Police Department and their investigation into the incident:
“Our thoughts are with the injured bicyclist and his family, as well as with the members that were on Engine 1.”
A call to a San Francisco police spokesperson was not immediately returned.
