Reporting from ORACLE PARK
The Giants were blown out by the Dodgers 10–2 on Sunday at Oracle Park, dropping the weekend series as first-place Los Angeles flexed 35 hits and 23 runs over the final two games.
Robbie Ray (L, 11-7, 3.53 ERA) struggled in the top of the second inning. He allowed center fielder Tommy Edman to hit a ground ball to first, walked Alex Call, and both advanced on a wild pitch. Edman scored on a sacrifice fly from Dodgers third baseman Enrique Hernández. The Dodgers (84-65) led 1–0 in the second.

In the bottom of the second, Giants center fielder Jung Hoo Lee was hit by a pitch before Wilmer Flores singled on a ground ball to center. Lee moved to third on a wild pitch from Tyler Glasnow and scored on a sacrifice fly from Casey Schmitt. The Giants (75-74) tied the Dodgers 1–1.
The Dodgers responded in the third. Teoscar Hernández singled, Mookie Betts followed with another, and after a flyout moved a runner up, Edman grounded to third to score Betts and put the Dodgers ahead 2–1.
Betts kept getting on base. In the fifth, he walked and scored on Freddie Freeman’s double to right. With two on, pinch-hitter Michael Conforto—batting for Call—singled to right to bring in Freeman and Hernández. Moments later Edman scored on a disengagement violation (balk) by Joel Peguero. The Dodgers stretched the lead to 6–1.
Robbie Ray wasn’t able to keep up with the Dodgers lineup, causing him to slip. He said:
“Just wasn’t able to really get on top of it like I was out of the wind up. … So just kind of fighting that all day, really. And it kind of made the command of the slider a little off as well, which pitched to Teoscar and the pitch to Freeman kind of burned me there at the end.”
With zero outs in the sixth, the Dodgers kept the carousel moving. Betts singled, Hernández followed, Conforto reached on an infield single that pitcher Spencer Bivens could not handle cleanly, and Miguel Rojas punched a two-run single to center to make it 8–1.
After a quiet seventh, Conforto lined an RBI single to right in the eighth to plate Freeman for 9–1. The Giants finally added to the scoreboard in the bottom half when Rafael Devers walked, Willy Adames singled, and Flores rolled a two-out RBI single to left to cut it to 9–2.
Giants manager Bob Melvin called the outcome of this pivotal three-game series ‘disappointing’:
“We won the first game, we scored four runs in the first inning yesterday. It feels pretty good. And then to be where we are today is disappointing. So it got away from us in a hurry.”
The Dodgers capped the scoring in the ninth. Approaching the plate 0-for-5 on the day, Shohei Ohtani singled before Hernández followed with a hit. Edman then sent a single to center to score Ohtani for the final 10–2 margin.
The Giants meet the Dodgers again later this week for another series in Los Angeles, and after wearing out their bullpen in today’s game, the Giants aim to hit better against the Dodgers:
“Kind of tweak the approach. … Yamamoto’s got the ability, he’s a little bit more at times a strike thrower. Glasnow, you’re always in between whether or not you want to make them work or try to get that fastball early in the count. So we’ll talk about changing our approach and we have to do something differently.”
NL Wild Card
By losing two of three to the Dodgers this weekend, the Giants dropped to 1-1/2 games back of the final NL Wild Card spot. What could have been a chance to pull even instead turned into a missed opportunity. As of today, the Giants are 75-74, a game and a half behind the Mets (77-73) and Padres (82-68). The Cubs (85-64) still lead the chase.
