The Stockton Police Department arrested a man suspected of stabbing and killing a 15-year-old student at Stagg High School on Monday.
Anthony Gray, 52, was booked into the San Joaquin County Jail on suspicion of murder, police said.
The teen had been stabbed by a trespasser that entered the school campus. She was transported to a hospital where she died from her injuries.
Police responded to the scene at 11:05 a.m. and the Stockton Unified School District Police apprehended Gray, whom they allege drove to the front of the school, parked his car, and then walked up to the child and stabbed her. No motive has been released.
The school was placed on a lockdown following the incident, officials from the school district said.
Stockton Mayor Kevin Lincoln in a social media post:
My heart is shattered by the violence that ended the life of a young student today. … No child should ever have to experience or witness such senseless acts of violence.”
According to the Stockton Unified School District, counselors were available at the school site for students.
