Man charged with murder for allegedly running victim over with minivan

A 41-year-old man is in jail on suspicion of murder for running over another man with a minivan last month in Oakland, according to court records.

Kevin Mak is in Santa Rita Jail in Dublin, charged with murder, for allegedly running over Chi Ho Leung shortly after 6:30 p.m. March 18 in the 800 block of Alice Street, according to police, jail and court records and a probable cause statement by Oakland police Officer Michael Jaeger.

Mak was driving a minivan when he allegedly confronted Leung on the sidewalk, Jaeger wrote. Leung hit the minivan with a shovel, Jaeger said.

Then Mak allegedly reversed the van, paused, then accelerated toward Leung, hitting him and knocking him to the ground, Jaeger’s statement says.

Leung hit his head and suffered brain damage, according to Jaeger’s statement. Leung died at 5:58 a.m. March 26, according to the statement.

Mak stayed at the scene of the collision and gave a statement to police, which Jaeger alleges is contrary to video surveillance footage and witnesses.

Authorities are holding Mak without bail. His next court appearance is April 13 at the East County Hall of Justice in Dublin.
