Police say at least six people were killed and another 12 injured in a mass shooting in downtown Sacramento early Sunday morning. The shooter remains at large.
Just before 4 a.m., police officials used social media platforms to warn the public of the shooting incident and investigation scene near 10th and K streets. Authorities quickly closed the area of 9th to 13th streets between L and J streets.
Police said Sunday that they have identified at least 18 victims, six of whom died despite life-saving measures attempted when officers arrived at the scene. The 12 other victims suffered injuries of “varying degrees.” The tragedy unfolded in a downtown area known for its nightlife.
People gathered near the scene desperate to find out if loved ones were among the dead and injured.
In a press conference Sunday morning, Sacramento Police Chief Kathy Lester told reporters all current information is “very, very preliminary.”
Lester said:
“We are asking for the public’s help in helping us identify any suspects.”
Police said via Twitter Sunday morning that they are aware of a social media video that appears to show some sort of altercation prior to the shooting. In a news release issued shortly before noon, officials said they are working to determine if the altercation was at all related to the shooting.
They ask that anyone with footage related to the incident please submit their videos to police using the online evidence link here or by using the QR code below.
Police announced Sunday that an information center for has been established at City Hall, where city staff and police will be available to assist victims’ family members. Sacramento County sheriff’s deputies and Elk Grove police officers are also in the area to provide further help.
On Twitter Sunday, Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg said:
“Words can’t express my shock & sadness this morning. The numbers of dead and wounded are difficult to comprehend. … Rising gun violence is the scourge of our city, state and nation, and I support all actions to reduce it. Our new Police Chief, Kathy Lester, has made it a top priority, and I stand firmly behind her.”
City officials spoke out at a Sunday press conference to “support the families” and implore the public to “step up” if they have any information that may aid the investigation.
This is the California’s 12th mass shooting of 2022, according to the Gun Violence Archive.
