Park service seeks public, tribal input in Tomales Point planning

The National Park Service is seeking public input for management of Tomales Point in Point Reyes National Seashore and is initiating a public planning process and 30-day comment period, park officials announced Thursday.

The purpose of the plan is to update management guidance of the wilderness-designated peninsula in Marin County. This will include the management of the tule elk herd in the park.

The park will also collaborate with the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria to incorporate tribal ties and traditional ecological knowledge throughout the process, park service officials said.

Officials said the development of an area plan is needed due to the severity and frequency of two historic droughts in Marin County within the last eight years.

The National Park Service announcement on Thursday initiated a 30-day public comment period.

Park officials said the preferred method for commenting is online.
